One of the most common questions I get from newly engaged couples is where to find good engagement session locations near Spokane. My honest answer: almost anywhere can work if the timing is right and the couple is comfortable, but some spots consistently deliver something special — good light, breathing room, and enough variety that we’re not shooting the same backdrop for an hour.

Here are five engagement session locations near Spokane I come back to regularly, and what I’d want you to know about each one before you book.

1. Finch Arboretum, Spokane — A Canopy That Changes With the Season

Location: 3404 W Woodland Blvd, Spokane, WA 99224

It’s one of my favorite engagement session locations near Spokane because it’s big enough that you never feel watched, which makes a bigger difference than you’d think. Tall tree canopy, dappled light, and a backdrop that changes completely with the season.

Best time to go: Any season works here — the canopy shifts from spring greens to full fall color, so it really comes down to the look you’re after. Whatever season you pick, plan to arrive at least two hours before sunset.

Pro tip: Those tall trees eat your light faster than expected, which is why I always build in that extra buffer before sunset.

2. Manito Park, Spokane — Classic Garden Variety

Location: 1702 S Grand Blvd, Spokane, WA 99203

Duncan Gardens, the rose hill, the Perennial Garden — a lot of variety without moving your car. The formal garden structure photographs really cleanly, and the Perennial Garden gives you something softer and more floral between the more manicured sections.

Best time to go: Early morning, especially on summer weekends — Manito draws crowds once the day warms up, and mornings give you the park to yourselves.

Pro tip: Duncan Gardens gives you that manicured, romantic look, while the Perennial Garden offers something softer and more floral — good if you want variety without leaving the park.

3. People’s Park, Spokane — Wilder and More Natural

Location: 2500 W Clarke Ave, Spokane, WA 99201

Wilder and more natural than the others — riverbank textures, a pedestrian bridge, wooded paths along the Spokane River. If you want something that doesn’t look like a garden and doesn’t look like downtown, this is usually where I’d point you.

Best time to go: Late afternoon — the river overlook does a lot of the work once the light gets low and warm.

Pro tip: Stick to the riverside trails rather than the open field if you want texture in your background instead of open sky.

4. Downtown Spokane — Urban and Editorial

Location: Around the Spokane County Courthouse (1116 W Broadway Ave) and the historic buildings along Riverside Avenue, Spokane, WA 99201

Architecture and texture, all within a short walk of each other. The courthouse brings a grand, almost European feel, and the historic buildings along Riverside Avenue add character and variety without needing to move far.

Best time to go: Golden hour — the light on the courthouse and surrounding buildings is worth planning your start time around if you want that urban feel to really show up.

Pro tip: Because everything’s walkable in this stretch of downtown, we can move between two or three completely different backdrops in one session without losing time to driving.

5. Tubbs Hill — Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

Location: 210 S 3rd St, Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814 (McEuen parking area)

About 35 minutes from Spokane and worth the drive. My favorite thing to do here is hike out to one of the beaches — about 20 minutes, relatively flat but can get rocky in spots. Pine forest the whole way out, then you open up to the lake with mountain views behind you.

Best time to go: Plan to arrive 1.5–2 hours before sunset — that gives you time for the hike out and still catches the best light on the water, which is some of my favorite light anywhere in the region.

Pro tip: Wear real shoes, not sandals — the trail is manageable but gets rocky closer to the beach.
